Team Wood MotorCycle Youth Academy

OUR SPORTS FUTURE IS IN OUR YOUTH OF TODAY!

THE MOTORCYCLE ROAD RACING CLUB OF IRELAND LTD ARE A PROMOTING MOTORCYCLE RACING CLUB. WE PROMOTE TWO SHORT CIRCUIT EVENTS EACH YEAR.  THE ANNUAL ENKALON TROPHY RACES ON EASTER SATURDAY AND THE DAVID WOOD MOTORCYCLE TROPHY RACES IN SEPTEMBER.

AFTER OUR RACE EVENT IN SEPTEMBER 2019, WE IDENTIFIED THAT WE COULD POSSIBLY HELP WITH THE WAY YOUTH ARE INTRODUCED TO NATIONAL TARMAC MOTORCYCLE RACING FROM MINI, PIT BIKE AND MOTOX RACING WHEN THEY BECOME 12YRS OLD. CURRENTLY THE IRISH MINIBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP CATER FOR YOUTH RIDERS FROM THE AGE OF 6YRS TO VETERAN ROAD RACERS.

MANY EUROPEAN COUNTRIES HAVE ESTABLISHED A WAY TO TURN SCHOOLKIDS INTO GP CHAMPS. ITALY AND SPAIN LEAD THE WAY, WHILE BRITAIN ONLY RECENTLY INTRODUCED THE BRITISH TALENT CUP, NOW A BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP CLASS IN WHICH YOUNGSTERS GET A SHOT AT THE BIG TIME. THE DIFFERENCE HERE IN NORTHERN IRELAND WE NEED TO ENCOURAGE THE YOUTH THAT RACE IN LOCAL MINI MOTO AND PIT BIKE RACING THAT THEY CAN COME AND HAVE A GO AT NATIONAL RACING FROM THE AGE OF 12.

OUR VERY OWN SIX TIMES WORLD SUPERBIKE CHAMPION JONATHAN REA STARTED OUT IN YOUTH MOTO X, THERE IS NO REASON WHY NONE OF THE YOUTH COMPETITORS OF TODAY COULDN’T REACH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP LEVELS.

A COMMITTEE OF 6 CLUB MEMBERS HAVE SET UP WITH MRS LEE WOOD BLESSINGS “THE TEAM WOOD MOTORCYCLE YOUTH ACADEMY” INSPIRED BY OUR LATE CHAIRMAN AND GREAT FRIEND DAVY WOOD, WHO WAS DEDICATED TO HELPING OTHERS WITHIN MOTORCYCLE RACING WITH HIS TEAM WOOD AND SPONSOR DEALS FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS.

OUR ACADEMY’S AIM IS TO HELP PARENTS/GUARDIANS WITH OUR SUPPORT, KNOWLEDGE TO GIVE THESE YOUNG COMPETITORS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 12 -15 BOTH BOYS & GIRLS THE OPPORTUNITY IN MOTORCYCLE RACING AT A LOWER COST AND RECEIVE THE RIGHT TRAINING, CORRECT SAFETY EQUIPMENT, RIDING TECHNIQUE TO INSPIRE CONFIDENCE.

OUR INITIAL OBJECTIVE WAS TO HELP ONE COMPETITOR IN 2020, THAT APPLICATE WOULD HAVE THE USE OF A NEW TIANDA TDR 300 MACHINE TO COMPETE IN THE MOTO-ONE CLASS AT ULSTER SUPERBIKE AND MONDELLO PARK EVENTS. THIS IS AN ENTRY LEVEL RACE CLASS AND A PURPOSE-BUILT PUKKA MACHINE. AFTER FURTHER MEETINGS WE DECIDED THAT ALL FIVE APPLICATANTS WOULD GET ACADEMY PRODUCT SUPPORT AND FREE ENTRIES TO ALL MCRRCI EVENTS.

THE COMMITTEE HAVE ALSO WORKED HARD OVER THE RECENT MONTHS TO ATTRACT SPONSORS, DONATIONS AND RACE SUPPORT DISCOUNTS FROM LONG ESTABLISHED TRADE, CLUB SPONSORS AND RACE SUPPORTERS.

2021 A SEASON OF FUN, TEAM WORK, WINS AND CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Team Wood Motorcycle Youth Academy race season is over for 2021.

It was another difficult year for everyone with restrictions in place until July. We managed to get two private test sessons for the academy riders to help them improve bike set up and generally get up to speed again. Unfortunately we lost Alexander Rowan as our scholarship rider from 2020 to the British Talent Cup but we managed to support him whenever possible. Rob Ronan from Dublin also moved into enduro racing in 2021 and we hope to see Rob back at tarmac in the future.

Martin Burnett, Lee Hara, Kai McClintock remained for this season and improved greatly with lap times and podium finishes. We also added Callum Clint and Dean Graham to the Academy and assisted all the riders in many various ways to help reduce costs and help their development and riding skills.

Mid July we still had our Academy Tianda TDR300 unused and ready for use, a young 12yr old from mini bikes just achived his nation race licence in June. Ruben Boyd signed his first motorcycle racing contract with the team wood academy for 2021. Ruben coming from mini bikes took no time in adapting to our Tianda Tdr300 at our second academy track test early July. He has since shown great bike and communication skills on how the machine feels and helps improve the set up. Achieving fantastic results in a short few races 2021 the Academy will again fully support Ruben in 2022 season with the team wood youth academy Tianda and look forward to seeing him develop and improve further.

The Team Wood Motor Cycle Youth Academy could not support so many competitors without the help of our sponsors, IFS Gobal Logistics, Pirelli Tyres, Arai Helmets, Ernie Coates Motorcycles, Signstik, Wiz Knee Sliders, ANJ Parts (ebay shop) Nutt Travel.com, Rea Timber Craft, Classic Bike Festival Ireland, Forrest tt shops, Misano Moto Imports.

The Academy are very proud of the teams results, each rider excelled, also Championship and race Wins.

2020 A SEASON OF COVID RESTRICTIONS.

2020 Year came to an abrupt halt before our season even started due to the Covid 19 pandemic. All plans for the Academy riders also stopped.

Our fully supported rider Alexander Rowan from Dromara was luckly to venture to the British Talent Cup Championship at BSB . He did exceptionally well at each event improving in every session. Unforturnatley the Team Wood Academy Tianda TD300 for the USBK Championship didnt turn a wheel so far in 2020. Hopefully this will be resolved in 2021.

Martin Burnett #72 also was able to travel to UK to selected rounds of the Thundersport Championship, again Martin excelled in learning new tracks, and racing new fellow competitors.

Kia McClintock #16, Rob Rowan #13 and Lee Hara #67 all had to sit tight at home and got racing at the only short circuit in Ireland this year at Kirkistown. All three did themselves proud getting great results with limited track time.
